Over the summer I had the opportunity to serve as one of two camp counselors for the Houston Shakespeare Festival Conservatory camp. We worked with 16 high school students from various parts of Texas to put together 2 green shows and a showcase compiled of monologues and scenes.

Things I've learned:

  1. Reading through the rules and expectations together, and then doing skits really helped set the tone for the rest of the camp.

  2. The essence of teaching is the connection you have with your students.

  3. Have a count off system and hold the students responsible for the rhythm and cue pick up.

Things to improve:

  1. Being fair and consistent with the consequence system.

  2. Focusing more on ensemble building games in the first few days.

  3. Disbanding cliques as soon as possible by addressing it up front. Randomizing seating needs to happen from day 1 with a big group.
